Implicit Consensus: Blockchain with Unbounded Throughput

چکیده
(This paper has been submitted to DISC 2017 on May 8th, 2017.) Recently, the blockchain technique was put in the spotlight as it introduced a systematic approach for multiple parties to reach consensus without needing trust. However, the application of this technique in practice is severely restricted due to its limitations in throughput, reliability, storage requirement, and privacy. In this paper, we propose a novel consensus model, namely the implicit consensus, with a distinctive blockchain-based distributed ledger in which each node holds its individual blockchain. In our system, the agreement is not on the transactions, but on a special type of blocks called Check Points that are used to validate individual transactions. Our system achieves superior performance over all existing blockchain techniques in multiple aspects with equivalent reliability. Most remarkably, our system achieves unbounded throughput which is by far the best throughput achieved by any blockchain technique. 1998 ACM Subject Classification C.2.4 Distributed Systems

CP-consensus: a Blockchain Protocol Based on Synchronous Timestamps of Compass Satellite
Bitcoin, the first decentralized cryptocurrency, achieves great success but also encounters many challenges. In this paper, we mainly focus on Bitcoin’s five challenges: low network synchronization; poor throughput; high information propagation delay; vulnerabilities to fork-based attacks and consumption of a large amount of computational power to maintain the blockchain. To address these chall...
متن کاملChain of Trust: Can Trusted Hardware Help Scaling Blockchains?
As blockchain systems proliferate, there remains an unresolved scalability problem of their underlying distributed consensus protocols. Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) consensus protocols offer high transaction throughput, but can only support small networks. Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus protocol, on the other hand, can support thousands of nodes, but at the expense of poor transaction through...
متن کاملOptimized Execution of Business Processes on Blockchain
Blockchain technology enables the execution of collaborative business processes involving untrusted parties without requiring a central authority. Speci cally, a process model comprising tasks performed by multiple parties can be coordinated via smart contracts operating on the blockchain. The consensus mechanism governing the blockchain thereby guarantees that the process model is followed by ...
متن کاملScalable Byzantine Consensus via Hardware-assisted Secret Sharing
The surging interest in blockchain technology has revitalized the search for effective Byzantine consensus schemes. In particular, the blockchain community has been looking for ways to effectively integrate traditional Byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) protocols into a blockchain consensus layer allowing various financial institutions to securely agree on the order of transactions. However, existi...
متن کاملA Scale-out Blockchain for Value Transfer with Spontaneous Sharding
Blockchain technology, sometimes known by its applications like cryptocurrencies, suffers from the scalability problem mainly due to the unideal throughput of Byzantine fault tolerance consensus algorithms. Recently, many blockchains have been proposed to achieve scale-out throughput, i.e., the throughput of the system grows with the number of nodes. In this paper, we propose a novel scale-out ...
